Workers Memorial Day at Lopez Urban Farm

On Tuesday, April 28, Local 9588 members joined the community at Lopez Urban Farm in Pomona to recognize Workers Memorial Day, a day to honor workers who have been killed, injured, or made sick on the job, and to recommit ourselves to fighting like hell for the living.

Workers Memorial Day is observed every April 28, marking the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The message is simple and still urgent: too many workers don’t make it home because safety gets ignored in favor of profit.

At Lopez Urban Farm, it wasn’t just about remembrance; it was about action. Folks spoke, shared stories, and honored lives lost. At the same time, CWA Local 9588 showed up in a real way for the community.

The CWA Local 9588 Women’s Committee and Equity Committee helped pass out meals with the Labor Response Community of the Inland Empire, making sure people were fed while we gathered. It wasn’t charity, it was solidarity. Taking care of each other is what this movement is about.

That’s what Workers Memorial Day should look like:
Remembering the fallen, supporting the living, and building power together.
